Grow StayDry Hy-P is a waterproof lick powder nutritional supplement for cattle and sheep. It contains a quality range and balance of minerals and trace elements to supplement ruminants where there is an increased risk of phosphorus deficiency.
Product is not hazardous and therefore does not require an SDS.
- Hy-D technology
What are the benefits?
Key benefits of StayDry Hy-P
- Hy-D can double the retention rate of phosphorus in cattle
Animals can graze these paddocks without production loss in the short term because they are drawing on their skeletal phosphorus reserves. Depleting phosphorus skeletal reserves will eventually lead to production issues later in life. Growth rates will not be limited by phosphorus if overall nutrition is already limiting. Periods of high pasture production are the times when phosphorus deficiency becomes the most limiting factor to productivity.
Signs of phosphorus deficiency
- Poor fertility
- Low growth rate
- Low weaning weights
- Poor coat condition
- Animals noticed eating bones
Importance of Hy-D
Phosphorus supplementation has been shown to be a successful remedy for counteracting deficiency. However, for every gram of phosphorus supplied almost half of it is wasted by the animal (NRC, 2001). Hy-D (25-hydroxycholecalciferol) is a unique ingredient in StayDry Hy-P to help increase bone density and retention rate of phosphorus. Research has shown that Hy-D can double the retention rate of phosphorus in young cattle (McGrathet al 2012).
Hy-D is more bio available from the diet than Vitamin D3. As a result, animals are able to more efficiently absorb the Hy-D and can then produce more of the active Vitamin D in the body. Improved Vitamin D status means greater bioavailability of the critical minerals, calcium and phosphorus.
Hy-D – a unique mode of action
- Hy-D (25-OH-D3) is the circulating available form of Vitamin D3
- 25-OH-D3 is absorbed in a similar way to but more rapidly than Vitamin D3
- By passing the liver, Hy-D ensures optimal plasma levels of 25-OH-D3 and a more efficient production of 1, 25 (OH)2D3 active form of Vitamin D3
The benefit of being more efficiently absorbed than Vitamin D3 means Hy-D can boost the levels of the active Vitamin D metabolites in the plasma of the animals. Higher concentrations a Vitamin D metabolite has been shown in a series of studies at the University of New England to increase the absorption and retention of both calcium and phosphorus (Graph 1).

When to use
All classes of livestock will benefit from StayDry Hy-P. Animals grazing on phosphorous deficient pastures should be supplement with StayDry Hy-P when they are actively growing, reproducing or lactating.
Paddocks with poor or no fertiliser history should have soil tests conducted for phosphorus concentration. Soils with less than 8mg/kg of P require supplementation. During periods of high pasture production in phosphorus deficient paddocks, it is recommended as a minimum to supplement with StayDry Hy-P. However, supplementation all year round will allow animals (especially breeders) to build up reserves to assist with greater productivity and bone strength.
Livestock grazing crop stubbles may also be susceptible to phosphorus deficiency. Usually, StayDry Hy-Cal is required while grain is consumed. Once the grain is exhausted then StayDry Hy-P is the preferred product.
